Dear Members of JSTS,

We would like to offer our sincere gratitude to all the JSTS members who participated in the annual conference [online] on June 16 & 17.   We are very grateful that we were able to hold the conference successfully and stick to the schedule without any major technical issues.

Especially, we would like to thank all the speakers who presented their work for us.  This year’s presentation times were a little longer than in the past, so we appreciate the speakers taking the extra time.  Conference attendees could really learn a lot about each speaker’s area of expertise, making the conference weekend really enjoyable.

And a big “Thank You,” once again, to all the groups and businesses that sponsor JSTS.

We were also able to have vibrant discussions and exchanges of opinions.

If anyone has any advice or opinions regarding how to improve events and communication among our members, please send an email (especially those who spoke at the conference and new JSTS members).

Of course,  if anyone else has anything to bring to the attention of JSTS, by all means please contact us.

Thank you for your support and consideration.

Signed,

—JSTS

The Swallows Arrive (tsubame kitaru 玄鳥至)—Season 13

Pretty soon we’ll have our last look at the cherry blossoms in full bloom.

This year we’ve been blessed with fine weather, so beautiful cherry blossoms could be seen all over the country.

We were finally able to send out the latest edition of the JSTS journal, Time Studies No. 12 (Jikangaku kenkyū 時間学研究), even though we’re already in to the new academic year.

In due course, it should be arriving into your hands, so please be on the lookout.

The payment slip for renewing your membership will also be included with the journal, so please be sure to renew your membership.

Thank you,

—JSTS

JSTS Board of Directors’ Statement Regarding the Conflict in Ukraine 17 March 2022

The situation currently underway in Ukraine is an unacceptable violation of human rights and will have a serious impact on the natural environment, which is the basis of life for all living things. We strongly protest against this situation, which threatens the free and vigorous exchange not only in the field of time studies, but also in academic research activities in general. We strongly urge a ceasefire as soon as possible and a peaceful resolution through dialogue and negotiation.

First Spring:  Spring Winds Thaw the Ice

The calendar has come back around and a new spring is here.

One of the signs of spring are the warm breezes blowing from the east. And it’s the time when the ice covering ponds and lakes begins to thaw little by little.

I heard a little butterbur had started to sprout up in my friend’s yard, so I went right over and took a photo.

JSTS member Tomoyo Takai, who has worked as an editor for the high end watch magazine Chronos, reported on the seminar.

(in Japanese only)  第1回日本時間学会 山口芸大支部研究会報告

Here is a comment by Takai-san:

“The Yamaguchi College of Arts branch of JSTS was able to hold its 1st ever seminar on Time. We covered topics such as music, videography, and science, and their relationship with Time. We had quite an enjoyable time.

We were all very grateful to the professors who came together to make this seminar happen.

We hope that as JSTS grows, we can grow too and have more and more chances to exchange our ideas and theories on Time.”

JSTS gladly supports seminars and other events that our branches/ affiliates would like to hold.
Members, please feel free to ask anytime about how we can support your event!
