Abstract\u00a0:<\/p>\n
The strong frightening emotion is often described in anecdotal reports, which imply that subjective time slows during life-threatening situations, such as car accidents. This slowing down experience is called “tachypsychia phenomenon<\/em>“. One may expect that the temporal acuity of the visual processing is improved by strong emotion. However, a previous study with a concise methodology claims that the time-slowing in terms of strong emotion is caused not by improvement of temporal acuity of the visual processing, but by the increment of recalled events based on strong emotion. We conducted several experiments to examine whether temporal acuity is improved due to strong emotion evoked by viewing a picture, or endogenous attention evoked by cue presentation, by the use of orthodox psychophysical methods. Our results suggest that the minimum duration with which observer could notice the image change in viewing a picture was improved by strong emotion and endogenous attention. We will discuss the basis for improvement of the temporal acuity in visual processing.<\/p>\n

Makoto Ichikawa is a professor, Department of Psychology at Chiba University, Japan. He received his Ph. D. in psychology from Osaka City University in 1994. He worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at Centre for Vision Research, York Univerisity, Canada (1995-1997), and faculty of Engineering, Yamaguchi University, Japan (1997-2006). He has been a visiting professor at Research Institute of Time Study, Yamaguchi University, Japan (2011-present). His areas of interest include spatial and temporal aspect of human perception, cross modal processing in perception and cognition, and plasticity in perception and cognition. He is a member of Japanese Psychological Association, Japanese Psychonomic Society, Vision Society of Japan, Japan Society of Kansei Engineering, Japanese Society for Cognitive Psychology, Japanese Society for Time Studies, Society of Photographic Scieence and Technology of Japan, Vision Sciences Society\uff0cand Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He has been a president of The Japanese Society for Time Studies since 2016.<\/p>\n
