Keynote lecture 2020 N agasaki
by Hiroshi HOSOI (Professor in Kwassui Women’s University’s Faculty of International Cultural Studies)
Title: Calendrical Systems and Conceptions of the Universe, and Their Connections to Nagasaki
| Abstract: |
Japan received so much in terms of culture from the mainland and from the Korean peninsula, but from ancient times it’s been the region of Nagasaki that has been the important window for receiving all those things. Nichien (dates of birth and death unkown), a Tendai monk from Hizen (present day Nagasaki and Saga prefectures) went to the mainland in the 10th century CE and studied the Futen calendar system (futen reki-hō). These studies led to Sukuyō-dō, which was a method of astrology-based divination originating in west Asia. Sukuyō-dō was able to predict people’s destinies and thus became a popular type of Buddhist astrology-divination in Japan. Later, from the standpoint of the Japanese world view in the medieval period, this type of Buddhist outlook of the universe and the Chinese outlook on the universe were at odds with each other, but in the 16th century another issue occurred that was brought about by Western cosmology introduced by Christianity. Western cosmology challenged the Buddhist outlook of the universe. But while the Edo shogunate suppressed Christianity, they adopted an outlook of the universe that retained the Western idea of a spherical earth, but were sure to erase traces of Christianity’s influence in favor of Confucianism and Shintō views. The stage for these developments was set in Nagasaki. In the Edo period, as restrictions against interactions with the West became stricter, Nagasaki served as a source of new Western ideas like astronomy and Copernicus’ heliocentric theory since there were places in Nagasaki where overseas culture could be found.

Keynote lecture 2020 Nagasaki
by Makoto Ichikawa (President of The Japanese Society for Time Studies)
Title:Does time really slow down during a frightening experience?
:a psychophysical study for tachypsychia phenomenon.
Abstract :
The strong frightening emotion is often described in anecdotal reports, which imply that subjective time slows during life-threatening situations, such as car accidents. This slowing down experience is called “tachypsychia phenomenon“. One may expect that the temporal acuity of the visual processing is improved by strong emotion. However, a previous study with a concise methodology claims that the time-slowing in terms of strong emotion is caused not by improvement of temporal acuity of the visual processing, but by the increment of recalled events based on strong emotion. We conducted several experiments to examine whether temporal acuity is improved due to strong emotion evoked by viewing a picture, or endogenous attention evoked by cue presentation, by the use of orthodox psychophysical methods. Our results suggest that the minimum duration with which observer could notice the image change in viewing a picture was improved by strong emotion and endogenous attention. We will discuss the basis for improvement of the temporal acuity in visual processing.
